When we started working with Repeated Measures about two years ago, he played us one song he had done with his longtime friend and creative collaborator Remy Kay - and no kidding, we listened to it constantly. Her voice was soft and effortless, her guitar picking was precise, and even the sounds of her fingers rubbing the strings seemed to form notes. We continued to inquire (pester) over the next year and a half, and occasionally would receive sketches of new tunes. During that time, we met Remy who turned out to be total a sweetheart, and all of this only made us even more intent on seeing this project come to life. Then, one of the last times we saw Measures before he departed for his year in Japan, he said very casually, "Oh, we finished the Remy EP!" Those words were music to our ears.
Remy Kay is from Diamond Bar and she has been an active musician playing in bands since high school. She is a 5th grade teacher and she writes gorgeous songs. In The Mourning is a bittersweet ode to her father who she lost before she was ready. When you hear these songs in that context, you understand the personal meaning of the eloquent lyrics, but the themes of her songs are universal. There is no one alive who hasn't experienced loss, but few of us are able to channel that into something so beautiful, and although there is pain, the overwhelming emotion that the listener will take away is hope and appreciation. Measures recorded, co-produced, and mixed In The Mourning, and we believe it further shows his range and skills as a producer, but this is Remy's show. Her guitar work is on full display, and many of the sounds you might linger on are likely her guitar manipulation. We couldn't be more proud to present this album to the world, and we feel the timing is perfect as we enter the time of year when we are even more thankful for our loved ones.
